“I’m a perfectionist.”
“I’m an all or nothing kind of person.”
“I’m either on track 100% of off track. There’s no in between.”
Sound familiar? They probably do- they certainly do to 2012 me!- and these are the exact thoughts that are keeping you stuck.
I cringe when people say “I’m a perfectionist!” because identifying as such sets us up for failure. BIG TIME. Perfection is just such a high expectation and we are literally never going to live up to it.
Perfectionism sets us up for never feeling good enough.
Perfectionism can feed into anxiety and stress.
Perfectionism makes it nearly impossible to recognize our successes, no matter how big or small.
It’s no wonder the self-proclaimed “perfectionists” out there have such a freaking hard time getting to, or maintaining, their goals! They walk around feeling not good enough, anxious, stressed and like a failure! Who can thrive living that way?!
If we constantly identify as a perfectionist, what we’re actually doing is setting ourselves up to feel like crap because nothing about us, what we do, how we think, how we feel, how we act, will ever be perfect. So, to identify as such, or to expect perfection is simply not serving us in anyway whatsoever.
So what do we do instead?
Give ourselves grace.
Embrace that parts of you that aren’t perfect.
Allow ourselves some flexibility so that we can screw up, then grow and learn from it.
Make the mistakes so we can learn the difference between high standards and expecting perfection- because there’s a huge difference.
